Welcome to the USS Athena
"We shall defend our way of life, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the ground, we shall fight in the fields, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender."
~Winston Churchill
USS Athena, one of the most advanced vessels in Starfleet, stands vigil over the Romulan Neutral Zone, responding to threats, answering calls for help, and keeping the peace. Embodying Athena's favored qualities of wisdom, diligence, and valor, her crew are terrifying foes if ever roused. [Want to be a part of it? Click here to join!]
Obsidian Fleet, a joint Federation/Romulan border defense force founded following the Dominion War, patrols the demilitarized zone between the two powers. The Romulans withdrew shortly after its formation.
It has been six years since Shinzon's short-lived coup threw the Romulan Star Empire into disarray. In the ensuing chaos, patrician and warlord alike scrambled to consolidate and expand their power, while the oppressed asserted themselves against their infighting masters. Now, fragmented yet under a unified front, the Romulan Empire is making overtures toward the Federation and Obsidian Fleet again. A Romulan Warbird once again patrols alongside Federation ships, and the Athena is joined by Sub-Commander Garix, a liason officer who is sure to have his own agenda.
Are these gestures and honeyed words merely sweet poison exhaled by a dying empire, the thrashing and pleading as of drowning men, or a geniunely renewed spirit of cooperation? Join us and discover the answer as we protect the Federation border, explore uncharted space, and boldly go where no one has gone before.

USS Athena Monthly Report: October 2008
========================================
Greetings, crew! I hope you all had a great Halloween!
And now for our first monthly report. We have just finished our first full month of simming, and I think we've accomplished quite a bit. We managed 26 posts this month, and picked up quite a few new crew in the second half of the month. A lot of you are new to Star Trek style online roleplaying, or to roleplaying altogether, but some of you have taken to it like fish to water, and I feel very lucky to have you aboard. This is not to say I lack appreciation for those of you who are still getting the hang of collaborative writing in a roleplaying environment. On the contrary, I am very happy to have you with us and look forward to watching you learn and grow as a writer and roleplayer aboard USS Athena.
All in all it's been a good first month. Good job, and welcome aboard.
Chevy/LCDR Victor Delgado
========================================
CONTENTS
1) Hail and Farewell
2) Promotions and Awards
3) Mission Progress
4) Quote of the Month
5) Other Announcements
========================================
1 - HAIL AND FAREWELL
This month, we gained four new crew members, but lost one due to inactivity. She never logged in, posted, or updated her bio. Alas, Larkspring, we hardly knew ye.
Hails:
+ ENS Riken Zax, Security Officer
+ PO2 Hunter Owen, Master-at-Arms
+ LTJG Ilphae Everhate, Medical Officer
+ LT Tim Veltkamp, Chief Operations Officer
Farewells:
- LTJG Larkspring, Asst. Chief Engineering Officer
========================================
2 - PROMOTIONS AND AWARDS
Victor Delgado has been promoted to Commander for completing Obsidian Fleer Command Academy. In character, he will remain a Lieutenant Commander until after the end of the current mission.
Normally, I would wait until next month to start issuing awards, but there is one individual who stood out right away and has made himself known since the very beginning. So without further ado:
It is my pleasure to present the Meritorious Newcomer of the Month Award for October 2008 to LT Kat'ar Ves. Joe joined us with an interesting character, with a depth of personality he has expressed through his mission posts. In fact, this is Joe's first person-to-person roleplay ever, but you wouldn't have known it. Without waiting for a cue, Joe took the initiative to start posting and made his character right at home on the Athena. Additionally, Joe has recruited his personal friend Jess, who joined us as LTJG Ilphae Everhate a little over a week ago. Thank you for your contributions, Joe, and well done!
========================================
3 - MISSION PROGRESS
Current Mission: Salina
In October 2008, there were 26 individual contributions to 12 mission posts and 6 personal logs -- for reporting purposes, joint posts count once per author. It's possible to be on target to conclude Act 1 by the middle of November, but we're more likely to be done with it closer to the end of the month. I'll admit to delaying it in favor of my little subplot. I'll get that wrapped up and try to get us in orbit around Salina this week.
========================================
4 - QUOTE OF THE MONTH
"Doppel-chain-gang"
Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe it is written that cloning an individual is considered highly ILLEGAL. What does that have to do with anything? Let me tell you. All of us are serving on a vessel that at any given moment can be separated into three very distinct sections. It is entirely plausible that you could get caught away from your duty station in the event of an emergency. Unless you plan on cloning yourself and having one of your doppelgangers in each section when that time comes, I expect everybody to be cross trained in different disciplines and know the ins and outs of this ship.
- LT Crellan Kell, "Sparking Orders"
========================================
5 - OTHER ANOUNCEMENTS
Starting with November, I will award the Crew's Choice Award on a regular basis. The Crew's Choice Award is presented to the player that the crew as a whole feels most worthy of recognition, and receives the most nominations. The only critera for nominating someone is that you, personally, feel that the player deserves recognition for contributions made that month. Nominations will be accepted the during the final five days of each month. For November, voting begins on the 25th.
Also, I remind you we have a Chat Room just for this ship, and a forum to communicate out-of-character. You'll see the links on the right side menu when you view our home page.
This month, I'd like to see each of you try to write at least one joint post with a player you haven't written a joint post with before. The more comfortable we are with each other, the more smoothly this sim will progress.
Yet MORE new crew!========================================

This is very exciting! We have a crew transfer from Task Force 21's USS Pioneer. Please welcome Tim, who will write the part of our Chief Operations Officer, LT Tim Veltkamp. Tim had been writing with the Pioneer for over a year when their CO unfortunately had to resign. But, we're glad Tim has chosen the USS Athena as his new home. Welcome aboard!!
As a reminder, we try to preserve continuity as much as possible, so though all these new writers/players are joining, we carry on as though their characters had been on board since the beginning of the mission, just "in the background" or "off screen" until "recently". That doesn't mean we can't welcome them aboard in character when our characters get a chance to get to know them "for the first time."
